Day ten of the Fringe turned out to be much less of a challenge than I was expecting.
The Fringe day actually started in the afternoon by catching Bylgja and Sola’s ‘Something Icelandic’ show in our venue! Not only are they both awesome ladies but they’re also brilliantly funny! It’ll be sad once their run finishes tomorrow.
Okay, so I had anticipated today being a difficult sell, a mixture of the weather and it also being the day most acts take off… with this in mind, I had hired the services of Josh McAuley, comedian and flyer-extraordinaire! And my did it turn out to be a great decision!
Josh was busy working on the crowd on the side of the Mile closest to the venue, myself on the opposite. The pissing rain was actually working in our favour – instead of scaring people away, we were able to engage and entice people into our dry venue for some top stand up!
It worked, it actually bloody worked! The room was absolutely packed, standing room only!!! This on a Monday and also the third time I had been in this situation in the last four days!!!
And the show? This was one of my best of the run! A fabulous audience and a room filled with warm laughter and engaged faces. This was the kind of show that leaves you with that warm feeling and a buzz that stays with you long after the show has finished!
I often hear people describe those who perform stand up as brave but the reality is that almost all of us are attention seekers. The attention we seek comes in the form of laughter and when that happens I don’t think there is a better feeling in the world.
Today I love my job. Who knows what day 11 will bring!
